Unhosted Wallets Management

Unhosted Wallets Management

When a crypto transfer touches a self-custody wallet, there’s no VASP on the other end to vouch for it. Ownership gets confirmed directly, before the transfer completes.

Every unhosted wallet, resolved somehow

Four outcomes, never a silent one

A wallet flagged as unhosted doesn’t just sit there. It’s either confirmed, corrected, waiting on the customer, or turned down, and the customer always knows which.

Verified

Ownership confirmed

Through a declaration or an on-chain ownership transaction, and the transfer can proceed.

Reclassified

Actually a hosted wallet

The customer names the real VASP instead, and the transfer follows the normal Travel Rule path.

Awaiting customer

Verification link sent

Two calendar weeks to confirm ownership before the link expires on its own.

Rejected

Verification did not complete

The link expired, or the wallet’s risk score didn’t clear, depending on how the case resolves.

Matching a name to an unhosted address generally isn’t possible. That’s exactly why ownership is proven a different way, not assumed from the address alone.

Edge cases

A few situations sit outside a clean verification

Link expired

Two weeks passed

Nothing happens automatically. A compliance officer still decides manually from there.

Risk flagged

Wallet fails risk screening

Ownership and risk are separate checks. A confirmed owner doesn’t override a poor risk score.

Misidentified

Actually held by a VASP

Corrected on the spot by picking Hosted and the right VASP, instead of running unhosted checks unnecessarily.

No response

Customer never opens the link

The transfer stays pending rather than proceeding on an unverified wallet.

Manual review

Doesn’t resolve cleanly

Reviewed by a compliance officer rather than left to an automatic rule.

Service not enabled

Add-on not yet active

Unhosted wallet verification is a separate service, requested and enabled ahead of time.

How it actually works

A specialized check, layered onto Travel Rule screening

Unhosted wallet verification runs as an extension of Travel Rule screening for transfers that land on a self-custody wallet, using a dedicated verification step rather than replacing the existing crypto flow.

Two ways to prove ownership

A declaration, or an on-chain transaction

Declaration

A signed statement of ownership

The customer confirms in writing that the wallet is theirs, as part of the verification step.

→
Ownership transaction

Proof directly on the blockchain

A small transaction from the wallet itself demonstrates control of its private keys.

If it’s actually hosted

One correction, and it stops being unhosted

Automated detection isn’t perfect. If a wallet is actually held by a VASP, the customer can say so directly and name which one, rather than being pushed through ownership verification unnecessarily.

  • A simple Hosted or Unhosted choiceShown as part of the same verification step.
  • A VASP picked from a listSo the platform can reach it directly.
  • Back onto the normal Travel Rule pathOnce it’s correctly attributed to a VASP.

When ownership needs proving

A direct link, not a stuck transfer

The customer gets a clear explanation and a direct way to confirm the wallet is theirs, rather than a transfer that just sits unexplained.

  • Flagged right on the transactionSame Requires action pattern as the rest of crypto.
  • A copyable link, and an emailTwo ways to reach the same verification step.
  • Two weeks to actAfter that, the link simply expires.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an unhosted wallet?
A wallet controlled directly by the customer’s own private keys, created in an app like MetaMask, Trust Wallet, or Phantom, rather than held by an exchange or custodial provider.
How does a wallet get treated as unhosted?
If a transfer involves an address that isn’t recognized as belonging to a known VASP, it’s treated as unhosted and routed into ownership verification.
Can the name on the wallet be matched automatically?
No. Matching a name to an unhosted wallet address generally isn’t possible. Ownership is confirmed a different way, through a declaration or an on-chain ownership transaction.
What if a wallet was flagged as unhosted by mistake?
The customer can choose Hosted instead and identify the actual VASP from a dropdown, which lets the platform reach that VASP directly rather than continuing down the unhosted path.
How long does a customer have to complete verification?
Two calendar weeks. After that the link simply shows as expired, and a compliance officer decides manually from there.
Does a low-risk wallet skip verification?
No. Risk screening and ownership verification are separate checks. A wallet can score well on risk and still need its ownership confirmed.
